The Wind Howls

She picks me up, twirls me, caresses me, startles me,
Placing me far away from what I have known
How have I grown?
I see her coming and cower for a moment,
Paralyzed by the fear that I will be carried off to an unknown land
Barren, deserted, and alone
I summon my courage, my resolve, my esteem
And then – I jump on and ride
Skater girl on the biggest wave in the ocean
Holding tight as the emotion rips and curls and bends
Free spirit taking hold
The shoreline is distant
The riptide is encompassing
The wind heightens the waves
And I laugh and dance and sing
Because this ride is all mine
And I will be fine
